Have you ever thought about the sheer brilliance of God’s Word? From the very first sentence to the last you cannot but marvel about the way that God’s Spirit inspired it’s authors. I listened to this one theologian (with a voice sounding like that one who narrated Mickey Mouse and Goofy) and he made mention of the way that the first verse of the Bible thrashes a whole bunch of “isms”.

The Bible starts with the statement:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

These few words thumps into oblivion a whole lot of isms that man have developed over the centuries to try and disprove that God is.

It thrashes Materialism – God created the heavens and the earth from absolutely nothingex nihilo. Matter did not exist, it was spoken into being by the all-powerful God of the Bible. He created it.

It thrashes Atheism – It says that God created. No one else and nothing else. It assumes the existence of God. It does not see any need to prove that God is, nor to argue about it. It is just a wonderful fact contained in these few words.

It thrashes Pantheism – It says God created, not that creation emanated from Him. He is absolutely distinct from His creation.

It thrashes Polytheism – It makes it clear that one God created. Further on we read “He saw that everything was good. Chapter 2 of Genesis picks this up as well. The Lord God” and not the “Lords” created.

It thrashes Agnosticism – It actually states that a God does exist. There is no doubt about it. It is the reality and it is important for our being here to make sense.

It thrashes Evolution – Again, He created, not allowed atoms or particles to explode somewhere some zillion years ago and voilà, something was formed with such marvellous complexity and design detail. He created it from nothing else but nothing!

It thrashes Fatalism – The verb “created” implies creativity and initiativeexercised by God. It is not uselessly steering somewhere in dull fatalism only to end in useless destruction.

What Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 is so true:

… for the weapons of our warfare are not human weapons, but are made powerful by God for tearing down strongholds. We tear down arguments and every arrogant obstacle that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to make it obey Christ.

What a brilliant work of art the Word of God, the Sword of the Spirit is! We can just stand in amazement before the God of His Word who inspired it in such a way to thwart every argument that man can and will bring in against Him and His truth!
